The department of Legal Metrology plays an important role in consumer protection. The concept evolved from a socio-economic movement, to protect the interests of consumers in relation to goods purchased and services obtained. ‘not less, not more, just exact’ being its motto; the department strives hard to provide social justice to all in the field of transaction and protection.Following the laws of weights and measures and good trade practices help in building an honest society also.This may be achieved by enforcing the following enactments made by Central and State governments.

In India, uniform standards of weights and measures based on the metric system, were established in the year 1956, which were revised in the year 1976 with a view to give effect to the International System (SI) of units.Apart from it, the Standards of Weights and Measures Act,1976
provided for establishement of standards of weights and measures, regulation of interstate trade or commerce in weights or measures and other goods which were sold by weight, measure or number.In the year 1985, the Standards of Weights and Measures (Enforcement ) Act, 1985 was
enacted for enforcement of standards of weights and measures established by or under the 1976 act. The advancement of technology has necessitated the review of above mentioned enactments to make them simple,eliminate obsolete regulations, ensure accountabilityand bring transparency.It has a;so become necessary to keep the regulation pragmatic to the extent required for protecting the interest of consumers and at the same time keep the industry free from undue interference.So a comprehensive law on establishement of standards of all units of measurement, interstate trade and commerce in prepacked commodities was passed bythe Parliament in 2010.The Legal Metrology Act, 2009 (Act 1 of 2010) came in to force with effect from 1st April,2011.Subsequently, government of Kerla enacted the Keral Legal Metrology (Enforcemnt) Rules, 2012 and that came in to force on 20/07/2012.
